First manure load delivered to Suomen Lantakaasu’s Nurmo biogas plant

First manure load delivered to Suomen Lantakaasu’s Nurmo biogas plant

The biogas plant currently under construction in Nurmo has reached an important milestone: the first manure load has been delivered to the facility. This marks a significant and concrete step toward industrial-scale, manure-based biogas production in Finland.

The first manure delivery, approximately 45 tonnes, arrived from a nearby Valio dairy farm to Nurmo biogas plant by a gas-powered slurry truck. In the reception hall, the manure was pumped from the vehicle into a reception tank, from where it will be transferred via hygienization to one of the plant’s three digesters. Each digester has a volume of 9,500 cubic metres. These digesters form the core of the biogas plant, where manure from farms as well as by-products and residues from the food industry are broken down by microbes under anaerobic conditions. The biogas plant produces three products: biomethane, biofertilizers and biogenic carbon dioxide.

Once completed, Nurmo biogas plant will produce 100 GWh of liquefied biogas and four different biofertilizers

In its initial phase, the Nurmo biogas plant will have an annual production capacity of 100 gigawatt hours of liquefied biogas (LBG). This corresponds to approximately 10 million litres of diesel. The liquefied biogas produced at the facility provides a renewable and domestically sourced fuel alternative for heavy-duty transport.

The plant will produce four different biofertilizers, which will be utilized by local farms. Depending on farm-specific needs, the digestate can be processed into fertilizer products with higher phosphorus or nitrogen content.

Increase in production capacity and carbon dioxide capture under planning

In its initial phase, the plant will process 240,000 tonnes of feedstock annually. Planning has begun to increase the feedstock capacity to 360,000 tonnes.

Suomen Lantakaasu has applied to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment for an investment subsidy for the capture of biogenic carbon dioxide. With this additional investment, the Nurmo plant could supply liquefied biogenic carbon dioxide to the market, which can be used, for example, in the production of e-fuels or to replace fossil-based carbon dioxide.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted EUR 9.4 million in energy investment aid to the Nurmo biogas plant project, and the Ministry of the Environment has provided EUR 101,800 in support for the biofertilizer loading tank investment at the Nurmo biogas plant.

The Nurmo biogas plant is a key part of Suomen Lantakaasu’s goal to produce 1 terawatt hour of domestic, renewable transport fuel. The project supports Finnish primary production, nutrient recycling, and the strengthening of Finland’s energy self-sufficiency.
