First manure deliveries reach Nurmes biogas plant
Suomen Lantakaasu Oy’s biogas plant in Nurmes will begin receiving its first manure deliveries in early July. The first manure delivery will arrive from a nearby Valio dairy farm.
The plant, located in the Pitkämäki district of Nurmes, will be commissioned during 2026. The Nurmes plant will produce biogas from manure and grass. The facility may also receive food industry waste that is not suitable for feed use. At the plant, biogas will be further refined into biomethane, which will be compressed and transported for liquefaction to Suomen Lantakaasu’s biogas plant in Kiuruvesi. The Nurmes plant is the second of the satellite facilities connected to the industrial-scale centralised liquefied biogas production plant built in Kiuruvesi. The satellite facilities help keep the transport distances of the feedstock used in biogas production as short as possible.
“The arrival of the first manure deliveries in Nurmes means that all plants included in the Upper Savo biogas project have now begun receiving manure. The commissioning of the satellite facilities marks the piloting of a new operating model that combines decentralised biogas production with centralised liquefaction. A successful pilot could open up significant new opportunities for increasing biogas production in Finland,” says Leena Helminen, CEO of Suomen Lantakaasu.
The Nurmes biogas plant will process 34,500 tonnes of feedstock annually and produce at least 717 tonnes (10 GWh) of biomethane. In addition, the production process will generate 34,500 tonnes of organic fertiliser annually, which will be returned to farms.

Suomen Lantakaasu Oy is a joint venture owned by Valio and biomethane company St1 Biokraft. The Upper Savo biogas plant complex has been granted EUR 19.2 million in NextGenerationEU funding.
