Lapinlahti biogas plant begins receiving its first manure deliveries
The biogas plant being built by Suomen Lantakaasu Oy in the village of Porkkala, Varpaisjärvi, Lapinlahti, will begin receiving its first manure deliveries on Thursday, 7 May 2026. This marks a key milestone in the commissioning of the plant , as the gradual start up of feedstock intake enables the biogas production process itself to begin.
“The arrival of the first manure deliveries is a major step forward not only for the Lapinlahti project, but for the entire Upper Savonia biogas ecosystem. The commissioning of the satellite plants initiates the pilot of a completely new operating model that combines decentralised biogas production with centralised liquefaction. A successful pilot would significantly increase Finland’s biogas potential”, says Leena Helminen, CEO of Suomen Lantakaasu.
The Lapinlahti plant is one of the satellite facilities of the centrally located, industrial‑scale liquefied biogas production plant built in Kiuruvesi. The plant produces biogas from manure and agricultural side streams, which is further refined into biomethane. The facility processes approximately 34,500 tonnes of feedstock annually and produces around 717 tonnes (10 GWh) of biomethane, as well as biofertilizer that is returned to farms in the surrounding area. The Lapinlahti plant received its environmental permit from the Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland in March 2025. In the initial phase, the satellite plant will receive feedstock from approximately 6–10 farms, with plans to expand the facility at a later stage.
Suomen Lantakaasu Oy is a joint venture owned by Valio and biomethane company St1 Biokraft. The upper Savonia biogas plant complex has been granted EUR 19.2 million in Next Generation EU funding.
