This marks a concrete step towards industrial-scale manure-based biogas production in the Upper Savo region. The first delivery, approximately 40 tonnes of manure, arrived at the Kiuruvesi biogas plant by tanker truck from a nearby Valio dairy farm. The biogas plant produces three products: biomethane, biofertiliser, and, potentially in the future, captured biogenic carbon dioxide. **Upon completion, the Kiuruvesi plant will be Finland’s largest liquefied biogas facility** The plant being built in Kiuruvesi will process approximately 460,000 tonnes of feedstock annually, the majority of which will consist of manure from local farms. In addition to the central plant in Kiuruvesi, the Upper Savo project includes satellite facilities in Lapinlahti and Nurmes. Construction of the satellite plants has progressed according to schedule, and feedstock reception has already begun at the Lapinlahti facility. Feedstock intake at the Nurmes facility will begin later in summer 2026. The satellite plants produce compressed biogas, which is then transported to Kiuruvesi for liquefaction. Once completed, the central plant in Kiuruvesi will liquefy approximately 125 GWh of biogas annually. This corresponds to an estimated 12.5 million litres of diesel fuel and is enough to meet the annual fuel demand of around 250 heavy-duty vehicles. More than 100 nearby farms will supply feedstock to the biogas plant. Suomen Lantakaasu collects manure from the farms and returns the biofertiliser produced during the biogas process back to the farms, helping to improve nutrient recycling. The Kiuruvesi biogas plant is a key component of Suomen Lantakaasu’s goal of producing one terawatt-hour of renewable and domestically secure transport fuel. The project supports emission reductions in agriculture, promotes nutrient recycling, and strengthens Finland’s energy self-sufficiency. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland has granted €19.2 million in NextGenerationEU funding to the Upper Savo project. The Kiuruvesi biogas plant forms part of the broader Upper Savo investment programme, with a total value of approximately €100 million.
